Nonwoven Roll Converting: What to Put in Your Specification

Nonwoven Roll Converting: What to Put in Your Specification

Define material construction, slit widths, winding requirements, handling restrictions, and acceptance checks for a nonwoven converting request.

Name the material beyond its product family

Start with the supplier, grade, fiber or construction details, and basis weight with units. Include coatings, laminations, or functional sides. Two nonwovens described by the same broad process name can require different handling.

Explain the end use and any requirements that must be reviewed separately, such as cleanliness, traceability, or restricted surface contact. Do not assume those requirements are included because the material category is familiar.

Describe incoming and finished rolls separately

Record the width, outside diameter, core inside diameter, weight, and count of the incoming rolls. Then define each finished roll format and how many are needed. Keeping these sections separate prevents a parent-roll dimension from being mistaken for a finished requirement.

  • Finished slit width and allowable variation.
  • Finished core inside diameter, roll diameter or length, and maximum weight.
  • Winding direction and identification of the side facing out.
  • Allowed number, type, and identification of splices.

State what good handling looks like for your material

Describe sensitivity to compression, stretch, edge shedding, or surface marking where relevant to the grade. If there are approved handling or packaging instructions, include them with the request.

Agree the acceptance checks with the converter. A vague requirement such as 'tight rolls' is less useful than a defined finished-roll requirement that your receiving team can inspect and use.

Connect the specification to receiving and release

Include lot labels, finished-roll numbering, pallet limits, protection, and shipment identification. State the quantity needed at your dock and its required arrival date.

For a new grade, discuss a trial before scheduling the full order. Bengal can review your specification and identify the details needed to assess equipment fit and prepare a converting quote.
